Reviews of Nicolle's
Arms and Armour of the Crusading Era, 1050-1350: Western Europe and the Crusader States

"This is a massive tome of a book, and an indispensible resource for detailed information.

I've only scratched the surface of the information in this volume, which is comprised of thousands of line drawings from manuscripts and other historical sources, as well as maps of the regions as they existed at various times. The information is broken down by time period and by region, and gets quite detailed. Distinctions are drawn between the typical equipment and the unusual, with logical assertions based on what we currently know and what the period artwork may have been meant to represent.

This book comes highly recommended, and is authored by one of the most reknowned minds on the subject. -E.S."

"This is a rather unusual book, consisting of line drawings from a huge array of artwork from the period, along with excellent notes as to the source of the work and the author's explanation or opinion. Not a good first book, but a tremendous "encyclopaedia" of armour styles and variations for the stated period and region. -B.H."
