Reviews of Ashdown's
European Arms & Armour

"There are a lot of things wrong with this book. It was written in 1909, which doesn't make the information wrong by default, but it has to be taken into consideration that a great deal of information on the subject has come to light in the last 100 years that dates this book considerably. The focus is almost entirely on jolly olde England, and there are abundant illustrations from artwork and funereal effigies that are actually helpful on close examination. The text, though in a rambling style, is useful in drawing attention to easily missed details. Assertions about "studded leather," "banded mail," and other errors of concept or Victorian terminology have to be discounted entirely when reading it, so its definitely not a good book for someone who doesn't know the difference between the genuine information and the unintentionally bogus. -E.S."
