Le Haut Koenigsbourg Castle
by Gerald Muller
Many thanks to Gerald for supplying these photos, taken in Le Haut
Koenigsbourg Castle between Colmar and Selestat, in France.
The pictures are of 15th C. "Lansquenet type" (Landesknecht?) plate, and a maille
shirt, presumably from the same period. According to Morden,
"It was not a full hauberk but a version with short sleeves. It stops at the
middle of the thighs. The front and the back are split (20 cm). The rings are
flat (perhaps 0.25 mm) with an ID at about 8mm. All rings are riveted. I asked
the guardian about the mail and he authorized me to see the mail at close range
and to touch it. The first impression is an impression of lightness... and
softness. I have touched the mail and in spite of rust, it seems very soft.
The pattern is 4 in 1. The collar size is shaped with a sort of V. The 2
branches of the V can cover each other to close and protect the upper part of
the chest."
