How to Build a Spangenhelm

Check the fit on all pieces before taking the bolts out. Note burrs on nasal piece. All pieces should be finished at this last fitting.

Check all pieces before riveting. All sanding and buffing should be finished before final assembly.

Peen rivets fron the inside, use the anvil or a flat piece of steel to support the rivets on the other side. Take care not to scratch up your helm by padding around the anvil. One slight bump and a scratch and ding will magically appear.

Pounding the top rivets from the outside, using a non-marring piece of brass.

Treating the inside to protect against rust.

Helmet completed, and ready to have the leather suspension liner added. The leather liner is made of up 1 long band for the brow and 8 shorter pieces which extend up from it into the crown of the helm. The leather liner pieces are made up of 2" wide leather x .125" thick.

Attach 4 of the short leather straps to the inside of the helm in an "X" pattern (the main liner will fill in the front and center sides in a "+" pattern). Temporarily attach the 4 remaining short pieces to the leather brow band at the front, back, and side positions, and check the alignment with the desired end result (next picture).

Once aligned with the 4 short leathers already attached, attach the leather brow suspension and it's short pieces to the steel helm band with long rivets. Using leather boot thong, lace through the holes in the short straps as shown. This will allow some adjustment of the height at which the helm will ride.

The finished spangenhelm!
